Engineering

Generally speaking, fabric buildings are offered in three categories: engineered, non-engineered and off-the-shelf / out-of-the-box.

Engineered:

In simple terms, an ‘engineered’ building is one that has been site-specific designed to ensure compliance with current code and jurisdictional requirements. In broader terms, an engineered building has been structurally analyzed based on site-specific environmental loads (wind, snow and seismic loads), risk category (use of the building) and importance factor (hazard rating) in accordance with the risk to life and property.

In areas where building permits are needed, an engineered building may be required. Building officials may also require that ‘stamped’ structural plans (drawings) be submitted for review and approval. Stamped structural plans have been reviewed by a licensed engineer (in the applicable state) and include the engineer’s ‘stamp’ of approval.

Non-engineered, or as we call them, ‘Sturdy by Design’:

All buildings offered by Alaska Dreams are designed for strength and durability, utilize the highest-quality raw materials and are manufactured to meet or exceed industry standards. Our sturdy by design buildings – though not engineered for site-specific loads – are well-designed, well-built, sturdy buildings. Our sturdy by design buildings utilize the same raw materials, and are crafted by the same manufacturers, that provide our engineered buildings.

We offer sturdy by design buildings for customers who want a high-quality building, but may not need an engineered building for permitting or insurance purposes. Sturdy by design buildings are offered in similar – or even identical – designs as engineered buildings, but without the extra cost of stamped plans. We offer sturdy by design buildings for customers who understand that – with a bit more monitoring and maintenance – a sturdy by design building may be an acceptable and more economical alternative to an engineered building. Please consult with your building official to determine local requirements.

Off-the-Shelf / Out-of-the-Box:

Off-the-shelf / out-of-the-box fabric buildings are generally small, mass-produced, light-duty shelters sold at garden centers and building supply stores. These buildings are not engineered, they are not designed for severe weather and they are generally not suitable for human occupancy. These buildings are low-priced and cheaply manufactured. Alaska Dreams does not offer off-the-shelf / out-of-the-box fabric buildings.
